NONGPOH, FEB 23: A major confrontation between the Assam police and the Khasi Student Union (KSU), North Khasi hills district was averted when the Assam police arrested four KSU members on Sunday but were forced to release them on Monday which pacified the union members and the agitated crowd who had gathered in front of the Assam border police outpost.
The release of the four KSU members identified as KSU Khyndewso circle president Edmund Shadap and members of Sabuda unit Klepsing Shabong, Pynhun Khriam and Kampher Lyngdoh along with Yarles Muktieh of Mawlasnai a driver by Assam police followed after the Umiam police intervene and secured their release on Monday.
It is learnt that the Assam police stationed at Assam border outpost arrested and beat up the four KSU members and the driver of the vehicle when the KSU Raid Nongtung circle wanted to stop large numbers of trucks transporting coals illegally from Nartiang via Thadrang to Khyndewso to Sabuda and ultimately to Diphu under Karbi Anglong . These trucks transporting coal illegally damaged the road and the KSU members wanted to stop it.
Initially the KSU members wanted to resolve the issue by taking up with Assam police. In the meantime these members also got wind that a person identified as Louis Majaw was allegedly collection of money from these trucks transporting coal through Sabuda to Diphu.
The Assam police allegedly let the trucks pass without stopping them for many weeks.
Getting wind of the KSU proposed move, Majaw reportedly Shadap to Sabuda on Sunday night. The KSU leader along with other three members accompanied Muktieh’s vehicle went but Majaw mysteriously did not turn up.
Surprisingly two vehicles of men instead came and picked up a verbal fight with the KSU members after which they returned to Karbi Anglong side. Little later it is alleged that Assam police personnel, allegedly drunk, appeared and beat them up. Not satisfied the Assam police dragged them to their outpost.
On getting information about their leader and members arrest by the Assam police, KSU members from the area descended and waited outside the Assam police outpost. Hundreds of civilian too joined them.
North Khasi hills KSU leaders and members rushed to Sabuda and demanded their unconditional release.
The KSU members were finally released when the Meghalaya police from Umiam intervened.
However, the North Khasi Hills district unit of KSU is not satisfied and it is learnt that they will agitate on Tuesday too against the Assam police frequent highhandedness.- From Our Correspondent
