SHILLONG, JAN 23: The central leadership of the BJP has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) alleging that the union minister of commerce Anand Sharma had violated the election code of conduct by announcing a scheme on usage of agro-textiles in north east region with a five year budget of Rs. 55 crores and, therefore, demanded a suitable corrective action against him.
Sharma made the announcement on January 17 while inaugurating the second edition of TechnoTex-2013 at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. The announcement was made well after the ECI had declared the election dates for the three north eastern states- Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.
Calling the announcement a serious violation of the election code of conduct, BJP national convenor (Election Cell) R Ramakrishna said the “announcement is a deliberate attempt to influence the electorate of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, and to provide an unfair advantage to the party in power in the centre (Congress party).
The complaint also said the announcement is also an attempt by the union government and the Congress party to disturb the level playing field between different the parties and, therefore, is a challenge to the efforts of the ECI to ensure free and fair polls.
Ramakrishna requested the ECI to issue a show-cause notice to Sharma, the Congress party and take suitable corrective action. – By Our Reporter
