SHILLONG, JUNE 21: Expressing pride to be part of the great national exercise of Biometric Enrolment, Meghalaya Governor Ranjit S. Mooshahary who along with his family completed the enrolment on Friday appealed to all the residents of Meghalaya to come forward for their Biometric Enrolment in their respective Biometric Camps on the scheduled date and time and cooperate with the enrolment functionaries to make the programme a grand success in the State.
The preparation of National Population Register (NPR), first of its kind in the world, is of national importance. It has been undertaken under the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship Rules, 2003. Its implementation has been entrusted by the union government to the Registrar General of India.
The first phase of this national exercise has been completed successfully in Meghalaya during 2010 along with the housing and house listing operations of 2011 census. The second phase of this exercise is the Biometric Enrolment of all usual residents of the age 5 years and above, during which photograph, ten finger prints and two iris images will be captured in the Biometric camps. This NPR Biometric Enrolment in Meghalaya n started with the Shillong Municipal Area and will be followed in other areas of the State.
The National Population Register is a historic in the sense that it is a comprehensive identity database, has been created to ensure the security of the country and its citizens. It will provide a strong feeling of self identity and will prevent identity fraud. It will also result in better targeting of the benefits and services under various government welfare schemes and programmes.
All usual residents will get “Aadhar”, the Unique Identity Number through this exercise.- By Our Reporter
