SHILLONG, SEPT 20: The twelve hours bandh on Friday called by the ngos demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state passed off peacefully. The bandh brought normal life to a grinding halt with offices, financial institutions, educational institutions and business establishment remaining close.
The ngos are likely to announce the next agitation programme tentatively by Sunday.
Government offices located in the 11 district headquarters of the state were closed. The attendance of government employees is said to be closed to “nil” as only the office of the deputy commissioners and superintendent of police (SPs) remain open during the hours of the bandh.
“The percentage of attendance by government employees is very thin less than 10 per cent,” East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal said.
The national highways 40 and 44, the lifelines for Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur and southern Assam, were also affected by the shutdown.
Five persons were arrested in connection with two cases that took place on Thursday night. One was the attack on the ambulance in 3rd mile and the other was an attempt to burn two vehicles at Pynthorbah.
Security has also been beefed up in certain vulnerable pockets in the state capital and all government installations are under full security cover, a senior home official said.- By Our Reporter
