Shillong, Sept 2: Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary said that the violence in Assam between the tribal Bodos and the immigrant settlers was because of religious communalism but for land rights.
Speaking at the 158th birth anniversary celebration of Jagatpurush Sree Narayana Guru organized by the Sree Narayana Gura Cultural Centre Sunday, Mooshahary felt issues should not be connected with religion and communalism. He said, “Religion is something which should be kept as personal and must not confuse issues with religion”
Mooshahary spoke of Narayana’s propagation of “one caste, one religion and one God.” He said, “What he (Narayana) meant by saying this, is that there is one “humanity” and that humanity has one “objective”. And that objective was the welfare of the people irrespective of caste, greed they belonged”.
He also called upon the people not to take religion in a narrow sense but to develop it in such away it becomes a blessing to the people and the society.
Former home minister RG Lyngdoh, who was also present on the occasion, felt that most of the problems faced stems out not from the bad things that bad people do. But the problems aggravated when most of the good people are just keeping quite without doing anything about it.
Lyngdoh felt education is required to pull out the society from economic problems, However, he said, “There is a disconnection between the education we get in school and the one we learnt from other informal means.” He was of the opinion that what is needed at the hour is not only formal education but the kind of education that would bring inner participation of the people towards the welfare of the society.
Lyngdoh strongly felt educated people are required to voluntarily see and help the rural people in many aspects. “There is a huge dependency syndrome in the rural areas of the state”, he said adding “Educated people of the state should come out from their comfort zone by helping the rural poor to be enlightened about importance of hygiene and make them aware of the different schemes of the government.
