Shillong, November 29: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma has requested the World Bank delegation to provide consultancy services to the state in preparing the estimates and details of PMGSY scheme RRP II which will be implemented with the 2015 deadline given for its completion.
Sangma told reporters after meeting with the World Bank officials on Friday that Meghalaya is entitled to get 230 million US dollars to implement the project in the state. The meeting discussed the hurdles and also remedies for completing the project within the timeframe.
Sangma informed that the Government has a master plan for the scheme and now there is a need to absorb the funds for the construction of roads under the PMGSY scheme and stressed on the need to have a comprehensive plan for effective transport system by railways, roads and inland waterways.
In this regard the Meghalaya government has asked the World Bank to provide consultancy services to the state in preparing the estimates and details of the proposed plans Admitting that the progress of implementation of PMGSY schemes in the state is slow, he said that the state government needs to fast track the implementation of PMGSY scheme.
The Meghalaya government has to construct 1625 kilometers of road in the state under the PMGSY within 2015 as three years have already elapsed..
Thes tate PWD department so far has prepared 224 DPRs for the approximately 600 kilometers of the road under the PMGSY.
Friday’s meeting also discussed about the need to use the inland waterways of Meghalaya for export and import with the neighbouring country of Bangladesh. Sangma informed that the government will appoint a consultant to work out the details of making inland waterways of Meghalaya for trade and commerce with Bangladesh
Sangma said the cost of transport through waterways is one of the cheapest means of transportation since it costs Rs 8 per metric tonnes for per kilometer while railway costs Rs 30 and Rs 50 for road transport . He also said that waterways is even environment friendly
The state government is planning to take up Jingram, Kynshi river and Simsang river as the inland water ways for trade and commerce with Bangladesh in phase 1. – By Our Reporter
