SHILLONG, JULY 14: The special court constituted by the state government to try out cases of arsons and violence during the ILP agitation has recently issued “arrest warrant” against the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) general secretary Auguster Jyrwa and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) president Joe Marwein for their failure to appear in the cases chargesheeted by the police.
Thirteen pro ILP ngos spearheaded the ILP agitations last year.
The arrest warrants were issued by the special court headed by Rithelda Rymbai, officials sources informed.
Earlier on June 4, the special court constituted by the state government to try cases related to Inner Line Permit (ILP) arsons during agitations last year had issued summoned notices to the presidents and general secretaries of the thirteen ngos to appear in the court in persons or through their advocate on July 8.
However, majority of the leaders of the ngos including the KSU and FKJGP failed to appear either themselves or through the lawyers before the hearing held on July 8.
The thirteen ngos issued with the summon with notices by the special court include – KSU, FKJGP, GSU, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Synjuk Seng Samla Shnong, (SSSS), All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO), Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Khasi Women Welfare and Development Association (KWWADA), Association of Democratic Empowerment (ADE) and A·chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO).
Earlier, police registered as many as 86 cases relating to arsons, stone-pelting, murder and other criminal activities that had taken place during the four months long agitations sponsored by the pro ILP ngos demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP).
Seventy one pro ILP activists were arrested in for the 86 cases and most of them belonged the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF).
According to the official, “So far, the court has issued arrest warrant only for the two leaders.”
The government has filed a recovery suit in a special court set up specifically for trials of cases relating to violation of the Supreme Court order on bandhs besides other forms of agitations and various clauses of Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act (MMPO).
