SHILLONG, JUNE 5: The All India Garo Union (AIGU) has demanded the immediate arrest of the absconding rapist sub-inspector Nurul Islam who had allegedly raping two minors inside the Ampati Police Station in South West Garo hills district even as it added that a high level enquiry be instituted on the matter.“Every effort should be made by the police department to trace and arrest the absconding cop and when arrested rigorous life imprisonment should be given to him for committing the crime and misusing his position,” AIGU vice president GG Momin said while strongly condemned the incident.
The union also demanded setting up of high level enquiry into the incident and strong actions against the erring police officers who did not arrest the accused and later allowed him to escape. Momin said, “This shows that the police are not serious in dealing with the crimes against women and children”
“We urged the department concerned to take punitive actions against the rape accused by putting him behind the bar and also dismissing him and those involved in allowing him to escape from their services.”
The union also condemned the nokmas, elders, victims’ relatives and the civil societies of the area for their insensitivity towards the incident by not questioning the authority over the illegal detention of the minor girls in the police station without any reasons. – By Our Reporter
