TURA, MAY 24: SWAT and SOT teams of the West Garo hills police arrested two arms suppliers identified as Imti Wabang (34), Robinson Sangma (29) and the recently formed militant outfit ASAK finance secretary Cherang M Sangma.
The arms suppliers were arrested from Asanang about 20 kilometers away from Tura while Cherang was arrested from his residence at Chasingre.
Police said that the two arms suppliers were coming from Guwahati in a private vehicle to deliver arms to the newly formed ASAK militant group. Based on the information provided by the suppliers, Cherang was also arrested.
West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh informed that Imti Wabang and Robinson Sangma are residents of Dimapur in Nagaland. Police also recovered 107 rounds of .32 and 48 rounds of .22 bullets from them. The duo had hidden the bullets inside their shoes.
Singh said,“The worrying part is that this is not their first visit to Tura, and we are trying to get more information of their earlier dealings.”
Singh informed that after interrogation the suppliers provided the name of Cherang, who had asked them to deliver the ammunition to him and paid Rs 25,000 for the purpose. They were promised payment upon delivery, he said.
From Cherang residence police recovered ASAK and GNLA demand pads from his house, along with a SBML gun with a modified bore.
The Phulbari police team had been on the lookout for Cherang as he had allegedly made lot of calls to local businessmen of the area. He had also visited some of the people demanding money.- By Our Reporter
