SHILLONG, JUNE 20: The Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) has taken umbrage at the statement made by MDC Adelberth Nongrum who had asked the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) bring about necessary amendment so that other tribes cannot contest or vote during the KHADC election within the Khasi hills district.
Nongrum had asked for an amendment after he learnt that a Garo lady from Langrin constituency was intending to contest the KHADC election next year. He had demanded the amendment so that other tribes cannot contest in the KHADC election as he felt that the Garo has their own council- the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) which was specially created to cater to the need of the Garo tribe.
The ANVC (B) however said such a statement will only divide the state on communal like and questioned as to how Nongrum can make such a statement on such a sensitive issue hurting the Garo community, especially in Garo hills.
The ANVC (B) said that if Nongrum statement was unintended it be better to apologies and felt he should be careful in making such a statement in sensitive matters.-By Our Reporter
