SHILLONG, JAN 11: Enlightening the Nokmas ( Garo headmen) and the ngos about the recent peace pact with the government on Friday, the ANVC(B) chairman Rimpu Marak said that it was very important for the people understand and participate in the draft agreement entered between the state government, the ANVC, ANVC(B) and the central interlocutor.
In a statement issued after meeting with the village elders and ngos, Marak said, “Acceptability and the participation of the draft by the people is our priority concern.” He informed that the proposed amendment to the sixth schedule need to be made known to the people as it would benefit the common man more than the representatives of their areas.
Marak said, “Every citizen can participate in the growth of their own areas as they are a mechanism of development and governance.” He expressed pride over the acceptance of their demands without any objection by the interlocutor.”
Marak said the ANVC (B) had pitched high on their demand for smooth financial flow to the autonomous district councils basically at two levels that includes at grass-root level with complete accountability.
Marak felt with the abolition of the municipalities, regular pay to the council employees can now be guaranteed, improvement of the government hospitals, government colleges in each districts and filling up of the vacant posts and participation of the women were an important part of the last minute changes made in the draft.
Marak also informed another meeting with all sections of the society, including weaker section, and the minorities will be held soon to make them understand on their role and participation in the proposed governance and growth of the state.
Marak observed, “The power to vote is a power to change and we are bringing that power home.” By Our Reporter
