SHILLONG, SEPT 8: Villages under Amlarem sub division in West Jaintia hills continue to grapple with power even as the river-Myntdu Leshka Hydro Electric Power (MLHEP) is located there. The villages have been hit with power shortage for the many months now.
“It is not to our advantage even if big power project like the MLHEP is operating in the area because many of our villages continue to faced problem of shortage of power supply,” War Jaintia Youth Council (WJYC) president Danial Khongsit told reporters after a meeting with chief secretary PBO Warjri.
Three villages – Nongtalang, Darang and Pdengkseh- are suffering due to power shortage for many months.
“Darang was without electricity supply for more than seven months while Nongtalang and Pdengkseh for over three months,” Khongsit complaint adding power supply in the area is very irregular and this has affected the people of different villages in War Jaintia.
According to him, there is no effort from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to repair the defected transformers to ensure that power supply is restored at the earliest.
“The chief secretary however has suggested that we approach the deputy commissioner of the district on the matter,” Khongsit informed.
The WJYC slammed the local MLA Stephan Mukhim for his inability to resolve the problems faced by the people even after several requests was made to him.
“We met and apprise him of the current situation in the area but till today no initiative has taken by him,” Khongsit said.
The WJYC also demanded setting up of a government college in Amlarem and to initiate steps to start a community health centre (CHC) in the area.
Khongsit said the area does not have government sponsored higher education. Therefore, they want the government to set up a government college in Amlarem to cater to the need of the entire War Jaintia area.
Stating that though Amlarem is the centre and hub of commercial activity of the area, Khongsit, however, lamented the area is yet to have medical facility and therefore the government should set up a CHC for the interest and welfare of the people of the area.-By Our Reporter
