SHILLONG, NOV 19: Dr WR Kharlukhi was unanimously re-elected unopposed as the NPP state president during the election presided over party national general secretary Vivek Raj on Saturday even as the party said it is looking for pre-poll or post-poll alliance with like-minded political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

The NPP is also optimistic of providing “new hope” to the people of Meghalaya as the party felt people are frustrated with the ruling Congress party.

NPP national president and Tura Lok Sabha MP Conrad K Sangma said, “People are frustrated and they are looking for alternative which I feel the NPP can provide.”

Sangma informed that the NPP is going to aggressively organize the party in the entire Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills regions of the state and a regional conference for the purpose will kick start from Tura on November 26.

Sangma informed that the NPP is having intention for pre-poll alliance and the party is working towards it. “Whether it will work out we will have to see,” he added. He said the party would like to work with like-minded political parties who understand its vision and with whom it can get along and complement each other.

Sangma however said it but natural that each political party has its own interest and felt in such a situation it is not always possible to work out a very clear cut pre-poll alliance as it depends on discussions and lot of sacrifices.

Sangma claimed that there are lots of frustrations against the ruling Congress as people are also frustrated because government schemes are not moving forward and promises are yet to be fulfilled.

Acknowledging the support of BJP during the Tura bye-election, Sangma informed that the NPP as the BJP’s partner will try to forge an understanding for the upcoming 2018 state polls.

Sangma said if the plans works out it will be well and good but if it doesn’t the two parties will still move forward and try to work together.
