SHILLONG, DEC 1: The All India Garo Union (AIGU), Shillong unit, has also demanded that the state government must examine the possibility of including Garo language in the Eight Schedule of the Indian Constitution like the proposal for the Khasi langauge.
In a letter to chief minister Mukul Sangma, AIGU president, Elbarth Marak said “We appeal to the government to examine the request for inclusion of the Garo language in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution of India along with the Khasi language in the interest of the Garo community.”
The demand came after the state government decided to form a five-member committee to push forward the demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eight Schedule during the recently concluded winter session of the state assembly.
According to Marak, Garo language is one of the spoken regional language of the state which deserves to be included in the Eight Schedule.
Marak said, the union also appeal to the chief minster to take personal interest to put the demand for inclusion of the Garo language in the Eight Schedule and pursue it with the union government.-By Our Reporter
