SHILLONG, AUG 28: A day after the teachers started their agitations across the state, Meghalaya government assured that the reasonable demands put forth by the teachers would be examine even as it has requested the Joint Action Committee of All Teacher Associations of Meghalaya (JACATAM) to refrain from any action that hampers the interest of the student community.
In a press communiqué issued on Wednesday, the government said, “Reasonable demands will be examined and corrective action taken as and where possible.”
It also stated that the government stands committed to its overall objectives of safeguarding the interests of the teaching community and of development and education of the youth of the state.
“As such, the government requests the JACATAM to refrain from any action which will harm the interest of the teaching and student community,” the release added.
Earlier, the teachers have been invited to meet the Commissioner & Secretary of Education and the Director of Higher & Technical Education and the Director of School Education & Literacy to discuss on the details of their demands with a view to provide permanent solutions.
However, despite being invited on two occasions on August 16 and August 23, the teachers declined the invitation and instead have chosen to resort to agitational measures to further their demands, the press communiqué informed.
Yesterday, teachers from across the state successfully observed the wearing of black flags as a mark of protest against the adamant attitude of the state government towards their demands.
The teachers has further decided to observe pen down strike on August 29 followed by a mass casual leave (CL) on September 3, dharna in various districts and zones on September 4 and a mass rally to be held in state capital on September 5.
The JACATAM is a conglomeration of 10 teachers’ associations’ right from lower primary schools to college level.
On the invitation to meet the government officials, JACATAM chairman ED Nongsiang said that the teachers do not want to waste their time talking to government officials because they cannot take any decisions.
The teachers have been demanding provincialization of services besides other issues.- By Our Reporter
