SHILLONG, AUG 22: The Meghalaya police arrested six persons including two juveniles for their involvement in a number of extortion cases in Assam.The Guwahati crime branch tipped off its counterpart in Shillong police special cell and the latter led by East Khasi hills SP (city) Vivek Syiem laid a trap and arrested all the six from Madanryting area.
Syiem told reporters on Thursday, “They were wanted by Assam police for their involvement in certain extortion cases in Assam, the latest of which is a case of one businessman from Assam who was victimized by their illegal activity.”
Case has been registered under extortion, conspiracy and criminal intimidation against them, Syiem informed.
The arrested have been identified as Deepak Thapa (29), Dilbar Ali (24), Rahidul Amin (34) and Liakat Ali (42) all from different districts of Assam. However the two juveniles who are 17 years old were apprehended from Mizo Veng Happy Valley in the city, Syiem said.
Liakat Ali is the mastermind behind the crimes committed by the gang.
Police have also seized a Bolero having registration number AS 01 AV 8068 used by the accused from Madanryting.
The Assam police have been informed of their arrest. Syiem said, “We will be handing them over to Assam crime branch today itself.”- By Our Reporter
