SHILLONG, AUG 10: In what could be termed as a watershed day for judiciary in Garo hills, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma along with the Meghalaya high court acting chief justice T Nandakumar laid the foundation stone for the district and session judge court in Tura, the district headquarter of West Garo hills.
Meghalaya high court judge SR Sen, Meghalaya law secretary LM Sangma, West Garo hills deputy commissioner who is holding temporary charge Ambrose Ch Marak, parliamentary secretary Noverfield R. Marak, Advocate General KS Kynjing, Additional Advocate Generals Dr. BP Todi and WHK Syngkon, Meghalaya High Court Registrar W Diengdoh, and the new District & Sessions Judge, Tura E Kharumnuid were among the dignitaries present on Saturday function.
The process of separation of the judiciary from the executive in Meghalaya is being speeded up with the laying of the foundation stone of the district and session judge court in Tura. It will also bring the judiciary closer to the people.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Sangma emphasized on the importance of the complete separation of the judiciary from the executive to create conducive atmosphere for the
justice delivery system in the state.
Elaborating on the government’s efforts to establishing the district and session judge court, Sangma said that the court would be able to accelerate legal proceedings thereby delivering prompt justice and at the same time help the understaffed police department who are weighed down with their duties in solving cases, investigation and maintaining of law and order.
Seeking cooperation from the people, Sangma said that all developmental programmes can be carried out only when there is peace, harmony and when people self regulate themselves. He assured that the government would equip the court with the necessary infrastructure.
Speaking on the importance of the district and sessions judge court Justice T Nandakumar Singh emphasized on the need to give importance and understand the local customary laws while delivering justice. Now that the judiciary and the executive are being separated one can expect speedy disposal of cases, Singh said. He urged the people to fulfill their fundamental duties.- By Our Reporter
