SHILLONG, JULY 26: Sleuths from the state CID seized thousands of allegedly fake Phd theses, concealed in highly secured rooms at the CMJ University campus located at Laitumkhrah on Friday.
A sleuth from the department said, “We have seized over 4000 printed PhD thesis on subjects ranging from corruption in India to doping of sportspersons in Gujarat from the head office of this private University.”
The sleuth said there were more than 6000 other theses which were ‘dumped’ at the varsity’s campus at Jorabad along the inter-state border with Assam near Guwahati which are waiting to be seized.
The subjects of the theses ranged from gynaecology,pharceutical, physical education, education, commerce and other general arts subjects, the sleuth said.
The sleuth suspected that the theses were printed in one of the collection centres of the university in Kolkata based on the quality and the designs of the theses.
The CMJ University came under the scanner of the state CID after former Meghalaya governor RS Mooshahary had filed an FIR against the private varsity alleging that it was awarding fake degree certificates to the students as it were not recognized by the UGC.
Mooshahary, who as the state governor was the visitor of this university, also made number of allegations pointing out on how the CMJ University flouted rules in its functioning.
This private varsity is now under lock and key after the CID raided the premises based on the FIR of Mooshahary. Some of the officials of the varsity had been arrested by the CMJ University chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha is still absconding.
Jha through his counsel had applied for anticipatory bail in the state high court which was rejected. But he again appealed to the Supreme Court and recently the apex court had ruled that Jha should first surrender before the police and accordingly bail should be granted to him.– By Our Reporter
