SHILLONG, JULY 23: A Kolkata based Techno Global Group (TGG) on Tuesday announced the commencement of the academic session of its Techno Global University (TGU) in Meghalaya even as it informed that up to Rs 1000 crore investment has been proposed for development of infrastructure of the University in the state.

“We are planning to invest Rs 1000 crore to develop the infrastructural requirement of the university’s campus with an aim to provide the best education, technology and employment to the youth,” said TGG national manager Prasanta Gangopadhyay while announcing the commencement of the engineering courses for 2013-2014 at a news conference on Tuesday.

Informing that at present the University is operating from its temporary building at the Shillong Polytechnic Campus in Mawlai, Gangopadhyay said, “We have identified a land for the purpose of construction of the campus at Tynring. The 56 acres land would be finalized within this month.”

Gangopadhyay hoped that the Meghalaya  government will grant the permission for the new university campus at the earliest so that construction process of its permanent campus begins at the earliest.

Unlike other private universities established in Meghalaya, the TGU has taken five years time to start running their course in the state after the university’s bill was passed by the state legislative assembly in 2008.

Gangopadhyay  said, “We had completely refused to rush things soon after the bill was passed as we wanted to ensure that all the laid down procedures of the state government and the University Grant Commission (UGC) are fulfilled.”

The university will 720 seats for the 6 courses (120 seats each) offered by it. The enrollment has already started online from July 21 to 24.

The six courses included Electronic & Computer Engineering (ECE), Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering (EE), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Civil Engineering (CE).

Asked whether the temporary campus can accommodate the targeted number of students, Gangopadhyay however said, “We know it is impossible to accommodate the 720 students but the university will have to make arrangement.”

With the setting up of the university, Gangopadhyay said, “Meghalaya will have its second engineering institute and this will go a long way in promoting higher education in the state.”

The TGG has around 53 campuses across the country with more than 55,000 students and 4000 faculty members. – By Our Reporter
