SHILLONG, JULY 18: A team of doctors from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) performed a miraculous life saving operation on a seriously injured road accident victim wherein a three feet long rod pierced through his abdomen was removed safely without damaging his vitial organs.
The thirty years old man who met with a major accident was brought to NEIGRIHMS casualty ward at around 6.30 am Thursday.
The accident occurred at around 1.30 am in Jowai, when a Bolero Jeep collided head on with a truck coming from opposite direction. The victim was the driver of the Bolero Jeep and was injured as a long iron rod pierced through his abdomen and he became unconscious.
NEIGRIHMS chief spokesperson Dr. Manuj Kr. Saikia said,“The iron rod which was 3 feet long, L-shaped with 6 inches thickness has pierced his abdomen through and through from front to the back.”
The doctors successfully operated and remove the iron rod from his abdomen.
Immediately after arrival in the NEIGRIHMS, the casualty in-charge Dr. Md.Yunus and his team resuscitate the patient and took a decision to operate him.
A team of doctors headed by Dr. R. Hajong, Associate Professor General Surgery, Dr. Nari Lyngdoh Associate Professor Anesthesiology along with Dr. J. Saikia, Dr. Habib. Dr. Vijay operated the patient and removed the rod that pierces through his liver and lodged posteriorly near the spinal cord.
The part of the liver that pierces by the rod was repaired. Since it is a case of poly-trauma along with fracture of the right hand and ribs, so at present, the victim is in ICU on ventilator but he is showing good vital status and seems to be out of danger.
After the successful completion of the operation, Saikia said, “Doctors were horrified to see his injuries” The rod had pierced his abdomen from front to back. Honestly, we were not sure if he could be saved, but two & half hours of meticulous dissection and preservation of vital organs along with repair of liver leads to success.“
Saikia informed it is a miraculous survival story as the rod was dangerously close to the heart, aorta, spleen, stomach, pancreas and intestine. He said, “It is altogether a miraculous escape.”
Saikia further revealed that this was an exceptional case, but successful removal of the three feet rod has really holds out hope for major accidental victims who come to NEIGRIHMS. He said, “This will serve as an inspiration for patients as well as doctors.”
NEIGRIHMS director Dr. AG Ahanger has taken stock of the situation round the clock and congratulates his team of doctors for performing such a difficult operation successfully. – By Our Reporter
