SHILLONG, JULY 16: Seven million out of the sixty million Facebook- popular social networking site- users in India are from the northeast India said New Delhi-based cyber security expert Subimal Bhattacharjee even as he informed that implementation of the National Cyber Security Policy will help in strengthening the country’s cyber security.

Addressing media students of St Anthony’s College on Tuesday, Bhattacharjee said, “The implementation of the National Cyber Security Policy, which was unveiled two weeks ago by the union government to protect critical cyber infrastructure, will also help in strengthening the country’s cyber security.” He, however, said internet users will also have to adapt to changes in the online world accordingly.

Bhattacharjee adviced the students to turn towards social media and the cyber world for gainful employment as the avenues were wide open.

Bhattacharjee said India has made great progress in cyber world since it was introduced in August 15, 1995 the country even as he said challenges in the online world will also be there.

Bhattacharjee warned that “Freedom of Speech” in the internet world cannot be absolute. He said there is always a question of balancing between privacy and security, reminding about last year’s exodus of people of the Northeast from the southern and western parts of the country following the multiplication of hate messages via the internet and mobile phones.

Speaking about the internet connectivity in the northeast, Bhattacharjee felt that online media has grown in the region, but the quality of service needs to be improved and that awareness on cyber laws was needed.
