Shillong, August 13: The Department of North Eastern Region (DoNER) minister Paban Singh Ghatowar has announced a cash award of Rs. 40 lakhs to the bronze medalist in the 51 kilogram category in women boxing in the recently concluded London Olympic Games. The boxer from Manipur brought laurel to the country by being the first woman to win a medal in the boxing in Olympic.
North Eastern Region (NEC) had constituted NEC Chairman’s Sport Award for Excellence wherein achievers of the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and National Games were felicitated and given Cash Awards.
To acknowledge the hard work put in by the achievers of the just concluded London Olympic Games and to acknowledge MC Mary Kom feat of winning the bronze medal DoNER minister and Chairman of NEC will over to Mary Kom Rs. 40 lakhs during a felicitation program to be held on 16th September at Imphal, Manipur.
NEC had taken steps for promotion of sport activities in the north east by supporting the national and regional tournaments held in the North East for different sport events such as Football, Archery, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Athletics, and Cricket for physically challenged sport persons and Chess.
The NEC is also sponsoring young and promising sport persons in different fields. – By Our Reporter
