VDCs, interfaith forum to work for peace

consultativeTURA, JULY 1: The consultative meeting convened by the West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakhi decided the formation of Village Defense Committees (VDC) in every localities, patrolling by the DC, SP, district magistrates and volunteers from the civil society from 6pm to 10pm to ensure normalcy in Tura and other areas of the district even as curfew will be relaxed from 5 am to 10pm from Tuesday onwards.

An Inter- Faith Forum with members representing all faiths was constituted and an Inter Faith Prayer for Peace & Communal Harmony will be held in Tura on July 7. Village Defense Committees which will be funded Rs 15000 from Voluntary Action Fund from the district.

The meeting held at the DRDA confence hall in Tura and was attended by the legislators, deputy dommissioner,  senior citizens, NGOs, youth organizations, United Christian Peace Forum (UCPF) and other religious leaders.

The emergent meeting called to constitute Inter-Faith Forum for peace and reconciliation also discuss security issues to bring back normalcy in the district following the unrest over the molestation case of a girl in Tura on 21 June 2013.

Parliamentary Secretary WD Sangma who is incharge  home (Police) chaired the meeting and stressed that every conscious citizen has to shoulder the responsibility of restoring peace. He said that a criminal no matter which community he belongs to once  identified will be dealt with according to the law of the land.

Sangma appealed to the heads of all religious bodies and ngos to make a concerted to maintain peace and harmony. He congratulated the timely intervention of the district administration and the police who are still working continuously to contain the situation and instill confidence in the people.

North and South Tura legislators  Noverfield Marak and John Leslee K Sangma who were also present in the meeting appealed to people not to believe in rumors as a slight slip would bring untold miseries and cautioned all to be vigilant against rumor mongers.

A number of issues relating to deviant behavior among youth and measures to control alcoholism and substance abuse, registration of migrant labourers and mandatory registration by landlords of all tenants also formed a part of the discussion

Even as Bakshi informed that curfew will be relaxed from 5am to 10pm from Tuesday he, however, said that  dry days would be reimposed for the next seven days.

Among others the meeting was also attended by Rongara legislator Rophul S Marak, IG Western Range H Nongpluh, Muslim representatives from the plain belt areas of West Garo Hills, members of Central Puja Committee, church leaders besides officials from the district administration.- By Our Reporter
