SHILLONG, JUNE 24: In cold blooded killings, eight migrant labours were gunned down by suspected militants in a remote mining village in South Garo hills district late Sunday night. Police said the migrant labourers were working in coal mines in Nongalbibra area.
Meghalaya Inspector General (Western Range) H Nongpluh said that the incident took place late Sunday night and informed that he is waiting for details as to how these labourers were killed as the area had bad network connectivity.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma condemned the killings and said the act was uncalled for and promised that those involved will be brought to book.
Police claim that the killings had no connection with the Tura carnage on Friday and said the reason behind the killing was because the labourers had just received their wages in bulk and it is suspected that the militants are behind the killing.
Police said the district administration has taken all remedial measures and police officials have been rushed to the spot to verify the exact nature of the killing.
The killing of these labourers followed last week’s incident wherein angry mob when on a rampage after it was rumoured that an eighteen years old mentally challenged girl was raped. One person was killed and several vehicles were torched down by the mob in Tura.
The Tura incident also triggered a mass exodus of migrant labourers from remote Garo Hills region after which curfew was imposed in the plain belts areas. – By Our Reporter
