SHILLONG, JUNE 22: The ANVC (B) on Saturday appealed to all citizens to unite in restoring peace in Garo hills. The appeals came following Friday’s night mob rampage in Tura. Condemning the alleged attempt to rape the eighteen years old mentally challenged girl by the labourers, the ANVC(B) however said what happened on Friday was unfortunate as it has affected the co-existence of different communities in the area resulting in assault and even death of innocent man.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ANVC (B) member Doang D Shira said, “The situation went out of control as the news of an attempt to molest a Garo girl spread like wildfire, the young people reacted promptly pouring from every nook and corner condemning the act, and making it a point that such attempts will not be tolerated by the youths.”
Appreciating the district administration for its quick response in quelling the violence and not allowing to spread to other areas, Shira however warned, “But tension is still brewing in some parts as many labourers are still scared, hiding and are on the run and not being able to contact their families and friends which is contributing to their fear.”
The ANVC B appealed to the people to help the labourers who are scared to be handed over to the police so that they can be send back to their family safely. Shira said, “We should make it a point not to allow the situation to flare up issue as all the culprits have been arrested.”- By Our Reporter
