SHILLONG, JUNE 21: Accolade have not stopped coming Wansuk Myrthong- the first woman from Meghalaya to scale Mount Everest- way as the Meghalaya sports & youth affairs minister Zenith Sangma is the latest to join the long list of well wishers who felicitated the now famous lady constable at a formal function held on Friday at the main secretariat.
Sangma handed a citation and cash award of Rs 2 lakh to Myrthong. As he congratulated her and said, “You have done Meghalaya proud by becoming the first ever woman from the state to scale Mount Everest, which is a reflection of your total commitment and sincere dedication.”
Even as Sangma felt in order to achieve something one should have strong determination, dedication and potential, he said, “Myrthong can be a good messenger and a source of inspiration to the young talented youths of the state.”
State Director General of Police (DGP) Prem Singh earlier suggested that Myrthong’s achievement must be suitably rewarded by the government as was done by other states to their achievers.
Singh informed that the Assam government had awarded Rs 20 lakh to such enthusiasts who have participated in such rock climbing events while Manipur and Mizoram awarded Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh each.
Myrthong who is a woman constable in the Meghalaya police is all set to get out of turn promotion as assistant sub inspector and a proposal to this end has already been made to the government.
Myrthong is the second person from Meghalaya to have scaled Mount Everest. Gary Jarman Lamare, a photographer with Discovery Channel had climed the peak in May last year.
Myrthong was among the sixteen climbers from Northeast India and their tryst with the Mount Everest was flagged off by president Pranab Mukherjee from Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20.
During the felicitation Myrthong said one of the things she did on top of the world, was to pray. She told the gathering, “I prayed for about five minutes… I cried… and thanked God for making my dreams come true,” Myrthong said.
According to her, those 10 minutes were the most memorable in her life.- By Our Reporter
