SHILLONG, JUN 17: Pressure groups on Monday urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to pass a resolution demanding that the state government must put a stop to acquisition of community land in the coming session scheduled to start from Tuesday.
The ngos consisting of CSWO, TUR, KSU, HNYF, KWADA, FKJGP and others along with people from more than 20 villages have been demanding that the government should cancel its decision to acquire 2000 acres of land falling under community lands for the proposed development of the New Shillong Township.
“Such rampant acquisition of community lands is unwarranted and should be immediately stopped as it is clear that government is acting as an agent to acquire Raid land for Companies and Private Sectors which cannot be entertained as it violates the Meghalaya Land Transfer Regulation Act 1971,” the ngos asserted.
The ngos have further asked the KHADC to immediately intervene for which purpose the institute has been specifically made under the sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to safeguard the interests of the tribal people especially the land and forest.- By Our Reporter
