SHILLONG, JUNE 5: A Shillong bound Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) mini bus ML-03-0197 was set ablaze by suspected militants in Bajengdoba in North Garo hills district early on Wednesday morning. However, all the Shillong-bound passengers are safe.
Police said that the incident took place at around 7.40 am on Wednesday morning confirming that all the passengers who were travelling by the ill-fated government bus are safe. North Garo hills deputy commissioner W Khyllep told this website that there were around thirty passengers in the bus.
Police said that the incident was the handiwork of the newly floated militant outfit United Achik Liberation Army (UALA)which is a new addition to the militant groups in the Garo hills area of Meghalaya. However neither the UALA or the GNLA and ANVC (B) have so far claimed responsibility so far.
Police informed that heavily armed militants numbering four to five forcefully stopped the Shillong-bound MTC bus that started from Tura last evening at Nengsawakse near Bajengdoba at around 8 AM. The militants then fired in the air to scare the passengers all of whom got down and fled leaving the bus empty.Once the bus was empty the militants set it ablaze. Police rushed to the spot as soon as they got the information and after reaching the spot they found many empty AK series shells.
It is also not clear as to why the militants burned down the government passengers’ bus. Security in the area has been beefed up after the incident and search parties have been dispatched to nab those responsible for burning down the MTC bus.
Khyllep also informed this website that additional SP Billy Graham who had rushed to the spot is now in the jungle along with a police team trying to nab the militants. He said, “As soon as I get report for him I will certainly share with you the details.” –By Our Reporter
