SHILLONG, MAY 30: The Achik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) has demanded upgradation of Ranikor into a civil sub division, re-opening of border-haats and setting up of police station beside others in the Garo dominated area of West Khasi hills district.
The demands are part of the eleven charters of demand submitted by the ASWA to Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday as it reasoned that the area is one of the most important places where large amount of state’s revenue is generated.
Even as it appreciated the policy of the government to bring the administration closer to the people by creating new districts, civil sub-divisions and administrative units, the ASWA, however, rue that the government has failed to control anti-social activities and crimes in Moheskola, Khonjoy and other areas.
The ASWA said, “There is great need for an effective administrative machinery to address the various issues concerning the people of the area.” It also demanded the setting up of police station at Nongjri in because of the worsening law and order situation.
The letter said the areas is rich in coal deposit – Nongjri Nonghylam Khulang and Bagli- and have been witnessing increased cases of extortions, threat against businessman and local people by miscreants and armed groups which the Borsora police outpost has not been able to control.
Making a case for a C&RD block, the letter said Khonjoy is the centre of all the villages in the entire border area of Ranikor and biggest business hub, but there is not a single government office to cater to the basic needs of the rural people due to which various government sponsored developmental projects cannot be properly implemented. It said, “Therefore, we strongly demand the government to immediately create a new community and rural development block (C&RD) at Khonjoy for the interest of the rural poor people.”
The letter also said that there is a need to reopen the border haat at Bagli to promote the economic well-being of the people of the region and felt such step will revive traditional systems of marketing of local produce between India and Bangladesh and will also restore economic and commercial ties between the people of both sides of the border.
The other demands in the letter includes widening, strengthening and black topping of Ranikor-Baghmara via Moheskolla PWD roads, making functional Khonjoy PHC, electrification in the entire villages of Ranikor constituency, safe drinking water, re-installation of MTC service from Moheskolla to Shillong via Ranikor, re-establishment of agriculture office at Khonjoy and setting up of State Bank of India or any other government undertaking bank branch at Nongjri.- By Our Reporter
