SHILLONG, MAY 29: 2013 seems to be a good year for sports in Meghalaya as the state junior team had lifted the national coco cola trophy in football on Tuesday, two teams- Shillong Lajong and Rangdajied football club are now in the I-League and now the icing on the cake is that the students of the Meghalaya based Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre located in Ri-Bhoi will represent India in the forthcoming Olympics for the Deaf at Bulgaria after bagging as many as twenty-six medals at the recently concluded National Games for the Deaf for the differently-abled students.
This is the first time that students from Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre Ri Bhoi have won so many medals at national level games organized by the All India Council of Deaf at Aurangabad where 25 states participated.
It all started with Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre, Umniuh-Khwan, Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya requesting the army’s Madras Regiment to train their students for the various sports events. The rehabilitation centre is an Early Intervention, Education and Rehabilitation Centre for the disabled children of North Eastern Region.
Many of their students who are handicapped in terms of speech and hearing were found to be potentially good in sports.
The army regiment held a coaching camp for 15 students of Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre for a month in December. Coaching was planned to facilitate and enable these students to participate in Silent Olympiad at Mumbai and the national games at Aurangabad.
The centre expressed its gratitude to Madras Regiment for assisting its students to achieve this unprecedented feat and for providing dedicated coaching and other related facilities by the Army. A felicitation ceremony in this regard was organized by FSHC
The winners of gold and silver medals will now be participating in the Olympics for Deaf in Bulgaria.
The Army has volunteered to further assist in training the students for the upcoming Olympiad.
Commander of Mountain Brigade at Umroi Military Station under the aegis of Red Horn Division said, “We consider ourselves privileged to have helped these children to achieve this remarkable feat. We as an organization are committed to the people of our country and we will be happy to continue our support to these students.
The commander said these kids will do wonders in Bulgaria Olympics and do Meghalaya and India proud.- By Our Reporter
