MHA to join bandh

SHILLONG, MAY 7: Over two-thousand members of the Meghalaya Healthcare Association (MHA) will take part in the nationwide ‘token-bandh’ sponsored by the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) on May 10 to protest against the unjustified government policies.

Members from across the country including Meghalaya will observe one day bandh and hold dharnas and morchas in all the states and district headquarters, MHA president Utpal Kr Das said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Altogether 7.5 lakhs chemists are members of AIOCD.

Das said, “The nationwide bandh is being organized in view of the unjustified policies of the government which has affected the medicine dealers engaged in its distribution.”

A four point charter of demands have also been submitted to prime minister, state chief ministers, union health minister requesting them to take serious note and resolve the issue affecting the pharmaceutical dealers.

“We are demanding the government to maintain the trade margins of medicines and not to reduce it in the forth-coming drugs (Petrol Control) Order 2013 while considering the rising operational costs,” Das said.

The other three demands including resolving the long pending issue of shortage of pharmacists and suitably amending rule 65 (15) (C) of Drugs & Cosmetics Rules to permit the partner/proprietor as a qualified person to dispense the medicines, to give relief under Section 19 of the Drugs & Cosmetics Rules to dealers who may have acted with bonafide intentions and foreign direct investment (FDI) should not be permitted in distribution and retailing of medicines as there are families of 25 lakhs employees are depending for livelihood in this sector.- By Our Reporter
