SHILLONG, MAY 5: Ten villages under Narpuh elaka in East Jaintia hills has given a three-day road-blockade call from May 13 to 15 to protest against the government failure to repair the dilapidated NH-44. The road blockade will start from 5am of May 13 to 5am of May 15. According to the villagers, the National Highway – 44 which connects the state with other parts of the region has been left unattended for over two years.
The deplorable condition of the NH-44 stretching from Sunapur to Malidor has made the journey through this road hazardous to the public who travels in vehicles and also to the trucks plying from here as it puts them at great risk of accident and is also a major cause traffic jam.
The villages’ people said, “We demand that the government must immediately repair the road keeping in view the interest and welfare of the state and its people.”
The villagers warn that if the government fails to respond to their demand after May 15 they might even resort to ‘indefinite road blockade.
The Jaintia Youth Federation had also asked the state PWD department to treat the demand seriously as this route is an economically important road of the state.
The road was been left unrepaired by the state PWD department after the GREEF handed it over charge to the state government for maintenance.- By Our Reporter
