SHILLONG, APR 26: Even as West Garo hill deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi revealed that violence against women continues unabated in the last five months, he said that Nokmas and Maharis should not be allowed to work out a compromise between rape victim and the perpetrator of such heinous crime against women. Addressing the West Garo hills District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) review meeting on crimes against women recently, Bakshi who is the chairman of the committee informed the members that these traditional heads do not have judicial sanction to forge a compromise in the violence against women cases.
Bakshi even warned that the of imposing section 144 to imposed restrain Nokmas and Maharis meddling into such heinous crimes.
Bakshi appreciated the Women Commission, ICPS, police and ngos for their role in handling the cases and generating awareness among the people.
While admitting that lapses had occurred in handling sensitive cases like that of the rape victim of Williarnnagar, Bakshi however stressed that the focus should not be on what had happened but on what should be done.
Bakshi also put on record his appreciation to the DCPO Nliss Dency Marak for taking a bold step in reporting the rape of thirteen year old girl by a middle-aged man in Tura despite pressures by the accused relatives not to report it. He assured that he would give all necessary support and protection to the DCPO.
Bakshi also assured the committee that all rape cases and also Dalu clans dispute would be transferred to the Fast Track Court of Tura for speedy disposal of the cases.- By Our Reporter
