SHILLONG, APR 23: Nineteen people, including a woman, were arrest by the police for being involved in torching the house and ten vehicles of a businessman at Mawryngkang village, about 50 kilometers away from Shillong on Tuesday on suspicion that the businessman was practicing witchcraft.
East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkhrang told reporters on Tuesday that the arrested people were involved in attacking and setting ablaze the house of a businessman, Tremelin Nongsiej on Monday evening.
Kharkrang said that hundred of villagers went to the residence of the businessman and torched the house on the charge that the businessman was practising witchcraft
The mob even torched ten vehicles.
Giving the details of the incident, Kharkrang informed that the incident triggered off when a cowherd of Domsohpian village alleged that one Banri Lyngkhoi of Langsymphud village had chased him. Following his “complaints” the Dorbar Shnong of the area summoned Lyngkhoi, who is an employee of the businessman.
Lyngkhoi was questioned and assaulted by the Dorbar and allegation by the the village elders that his boss was practising witchcraft led to the villagers attacking the businessman house.
However, the police on being informed about the incident immediately rushed to the house of the businessman and lathi-charged and even had to resort to blank firing to bring the situation under control. The timely arrival of the police is said to have averted a major crime from taking place.
Kharkhrang informed that the businessman family is safe and said that the police would take drastic action against the people who are involved even if they are the members of the Dorbar.
The arrested persons were also brought to the court and police has asked for their custody.- By Our Reporter
