SHILLONG, APR 8 : Thelin Phanbhuh, State Women Commission (SWC) chairperson, and five other members met East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri, East Garo hills SP and other officials to enquire about the progress status on the gang-rape case of the sixteen year old school girl in Williamnagar in December last year.
Phanbhuh held a meeting with the DC, SP, Williamnagar Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) principal magistrate Dr. Rezina Ch Marak and district social welfare board members on Monday morning. She was briefed by the officials about the actions taken by them in the gang-rape case and also that the case is now being heard in the fast track court in Tura, district headquarters of West Garo hills district.
On the night of December 13, 2012, a sixteen year old school girl was accosted by about sixteen boys who gang-raped her. The girl was on her way home after visiting the Simsang festival when she was stopped by the boys who raped her.
There has been hue and cry over the gang-rape of the school girl with accusation against the state government, police and district administration for not taking any actions to punish the guilty. However, the government has informed that the case is now with the fast track court and the girl and her family will get the justice that they deserve.
During the meeting with the East Garo hills officials, Phanbhuh also expressed the SWC desire to conduct workshop on crime against women and also strengthen the district level committee. – By Our Reporter
