SHILLONG, MAR 28: National Commission for Women (NCW) member Wansuk Syiem said that as long as women fights for their rights the end result will be “success.” She informed that laws relating to women have been passed and amended to safeguards and strengthen their rights.
Speaking as the chief guest during the one day interactive session on women and their legal rights organized by the NCW in collaboration with State Resource Centre for Women and Meghalaya government’s Social Welfare department at Yalana Hotel on Thursday, Syiem, however, stressed on the need to organized more legal awareness campaigns so that women, especially from the rural areas, knows about their legal rights.
T Phanbun, chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), OB Tariang, Chairperson, State Social Welfare Board, HM Shangpliang, Director, of the Social Welfare department, S Arya, member of NCW, LN Jyrwa, Mission Director of the State Resource Centre for Women were also present.
The interactive session was attended by the representatives from ngos, police, health, education and social welfare departments. The panel of experts included Dr. F Nonglait advocate, Dr. Shailinia Syiem, Medical Officer, Bethany hospital, Dr. MPR. Lyngdoh, retd. Principal of Shillong College, Jacinta Ivory Rapthap, assistant professor of NEHU and HB Sangma, Inspector of police.
Syiem hoped that the interactive session will come out with recommendations and suggestions for the benefit of women saying that the session will also make women aware of their legal rights.
Phanbuh, on the other hand, opined that most women are not aware of their legal rights and said that empowerment to women by making them aware of their legal rights and capacity building to use these rights will help such women in exercising their rights.
In his brief speech HM Shangpliang lauded the National Commission for Women for organizing the interactive session which he said is appropriate for women empowerment. He hoped that the session will be able to come out with concrete and constructive suggestions.- By Our Reporter
