SHILLONG, MARCH 22: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has asked the Meghalaya government to increase the amount of money given to students from the border areas as scholarships in view of the increase in the costs of books and house rents.
Raising the issue during question hour in the state Assembly on Friday, UDP president and leader of the Opposition Donkupar Roy said the government needs to revise the scholarship money right from the lower primary level to the degree level. “There is need to raise the amount of the scholarship taking into consideration the increase in house rent, educational fees and books, besides others,” he said.
Notably, the money given for scholarships and stipends was last revised by the state government in 2003.
Border areas development minister Prestone Tynsong assured the House that matter would be taken up and examined by his department.
Giving a brief detail of scholarships and stipends given to students hailing from border areas, the minister said that at pre-matric stage under LP scholarship examination, Rs 100 was given to those ranked between 1 and 10 in their classes and Rs 70 to all the students securing 1st division. Under ME scholarship examination, it was Rs 150 and Rs 100.
In the case of SSLC and HSSLC examinations, students ranked between 1 and 10 were given Rs 300, those securing 1st division Rs 200, 2nd division Rs 100 and third division Rs 50. (By Our Reporter)
