SHILLONG, MARCH 20: Host Meghalaya continued their dominating performance in the on-going Dr. T. Ao Memorial Football Tournament, trouncing a hapless Nagaland 4-0 in their second Group A match at the JN Sports Complex here on Wednesday.
With this win, Meghalaya are sitting pretty at the top of the group with two wins to their name, having defeated Arunachal Pradesh in their first match on Monday. The red-hot host will meet Assam in their last group encounter on Friday, but they have as good as qualified for the last four stage of the tournament being played between the eight north-eastern states.
It was actually Nagaland who dominated the first 15 minutes of the game with their forays into the Meghalaya citadel, but could not break the deadlock. The home team made its first attack in the 16th minute when Donbok Khyndep’ was denied a goal by the Nagaland custodian who punched his firm shot away for a flag kick.
Meghalaya broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Milton J Kharsati converted a cross from skipper Niwan O Gatphoh. A minute later Niwan converted a pass from Donbok Khymdeit to make 2-0.
After the change of ends, the home team continued to build pressure over the visitors and went 3-0 up in the 54th minute of the game through the boot of Milancy Khongstia. It was skipper Niwan who hammered the last nail on the coffin of Nagaland in the 76th minute.
Earlier in the day, Assam beat Arunachal Pradesh 2-0. For the winners Toko Polium scored both the goals in the 22nd and 72nd minutes of the game. (By Our Reporter)
