Shillong, August 1: With the launching of a website designed to cater news to the mass on the net besides promoting the state of Meghalaya in the tourism sector, it was clear that many agree Oh! Meghalaya.com would also create jobs for the ‘unemployed educated and skilled’ youth.
While speaking on the occasion as chief guest, IT Commissioner and Secretary DP Wahlang said, “Initially, we did not see much in the proposal but the spirit in +which the director kept up the pace with endurance and worked hard for many months so that Oh! Meghalaya sees the light of day is what really counts.”
Adviser of the website team and former Home Minister RG Lyngdoh expressed his enthusiasm on the website stating that ‘tourism is lifeline of Meghalaya.
“While access to market is difficult through tourism we can bring the market to us, benefiting other sectors like horticulture, veterinary, handicrafts and handloom, fisheries, even music can start a holistic development of the state,” Lyngdoh said.
Based on his observation that the educated youth are pushed to the brink of helplessness in getting jobs despite having the skills, Oh! Meghalaya director Tilak Rai conceived the idea of starting the website to ‘cater news and information as well as promote Meghalaya’ by roping in professionals in the IT field as well as talented writers.
“The portal is not owned by any single person but a partnership deal where every member holds the responsibility to keep it going, and become beneficial to stakeholder,” Tilak Rai told the gathering this evening.
The website Oh! Meghalaya is now available and daily news updates are at 4 PM and the morning after.
It is worth mentioning that the State government via its IT Department has set up an incentive to encourage entrepreneurs in the IT field and Tilak Rai and his team would be the first to avail of the incentive provided the project is viable and can sustain.
