SHILLONG, FEB 19: The Election Commission of India (ECI) transferred the North Garo hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Goenka and replaced him with a 2nd battalion MLP commandant Dr. M Dr N Rajamarthandan even as the state Election department suspended Mairang Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) HML Kynta just three days ahead of the February 23 assembly elections.
ECI sources said that Goenka has been transferred to ensure that the election in the North Garo hills district is held under a neutral district police chief. The transfer order of Goenka was issued on Tuesday evening.
Goenka became the second SP to be transferred after the Ri Bhoi SP Claudia Lyngwa. The ECI had also transferred Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Kulbir Kishen and replaced him with Prem Singh.
Even the PSO of HSPDP president HS Lyngdoh has been served with a show-cause notice by the police department for the stone throwing incident on Monday. The PSO was sleeping in the next room at the PWD inspection bungalow when the incident took place at 7 am on Monday.
The election impact did not leave even the state Chief Secretary WMS Pariat as he was forced to go on leave because one of his relatives is contesting the elections.
Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik said that the Mairang EAC HML Kynta has been placed under suspension for dereliction of election duty. He however did not elaborate on the nature of the dereliction of duty.-By Our Reporter
