SHILLONG, FEB 11: The Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) said it would demand a separate “Hynniewtrep State” (Seven Huts state) besides the solution to the age-old boundary dispute with Assam.

The decision to demand for a separate state and resolving the boundary dispute with Assam was taken at the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of HANM meeting held on Monday. These demands will be place before the central government.

HANM assistant general secretary Damon Dkhar told a news conference on Monday,“We would meet the central leaders to discuss on our demands by the first week of March.”

Dkhar said, “It is time for the Khasis (Khynriam, Pnar, Bhoi, War Lyngngam) to have their own state as even the Garos are demanding for a separate Garo land.”

According to HANM, the need for the demand of a separate state has been felt because of growing unemployment problem of the Khasis youths even after 40 years of statehood. And also the pending boundary dispute which has remain unresolved for forty years.

Speaking about the Meghalaya government’s reservation police Dkhar said, “The reservation policy that the government provides for the Khasis which is only 40 per cent is too less if based upon the population ratio that leaves thousands of unemployed youth in the region.”

Speaking about the sustainability of such a state, Dkhar that the regions out of which the new state will be carved have enough resources, especially mineral resources,  from which most of the revenue to the state and centre government is generated. Dkhar said, “We can very well sustain on our own and it will be a boost to our own people.”

Dkhar informed that the issue of a separate state will soon be put before the people through mass campaigns explaining the need for a such a state. He said this will be to garner support for the movement and also elicit their views on the issue.

The HANM leader informed that the organization will also demand an early settlement of the long-pending boundary dispute with Assam. He said they will take up the issue with the new Meghalaya government after the elections and also with the centre.- By Our Reporter
