SHILLONG, FEB 8: Assam has agreed to help Meghalaya in ensuring a “free and fair” elections in the February 23 Meghalaya assembly election in the 138 polling stations along the one kilometer radius of the inter-state borders. Some polling stations in this stretch have been classified as sensitive and hyper-sensitive.
Assam gave the assurance to cooperate with Meghalaya in conducting the elections smoothly in the border at a meeting held on Friday between officials of the two states.
The meeting held at Pinewood Hotel was represented by the Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik, principal secretary (home) KS Kropha and police officials.
Naik said after the meeting, “Assam has assured its “full-cooperation” for free and fair conduct of the elections especially in the border areas.” Maintenance of law and order in the border areas during the election process was discussed at great length
Naik informed, “Both the states discussed about the general maintenance of law and order in the border area.,”
Naik said that there are some polling stations in the border areas where polling officials will have to travel through Assam. The neighbouring state has assured Meghalaya of all possible cooperation in this regards.
Naik also informed that the meeting discussed the requirement of transportation of troops for election duty to these areas.- By Our Reporter
