GNLA militants gave police the slip

SHILLONG, FEB 4: Williamnagar’s Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) area commander Jimmy and seven of his cadre members gave police the slip after exchange of fire with the SWAT and COBRA commandos in Rongdol village under Sonsak constituency early Monday morning.

According to East Garo hills Superintendent of Police (SP) JFK Marak, the militants slipped into the jungle after a brief gun battle with the special team of the police and the CRPF. The encounter between the police team and the militants took place at around 6 am Monday.

The police spotted the militants in the Rongdol village and immediately open fire. However after a brief exchange of fire the militants led by Jimmy slipped into the thick jungle. Marak said, “The GNLA militants were camping in the nearby jungle.”

When the police team spotted them, they tried to cordon off the whole village. However the militants after opening fire at the SWAT and COBRA team manage to give the police a slip.

On being fired by the militants, the commandos did retaliate but they could not launch a full scale battle with the militants as there were many women and children in the area. No one was hurt from either side. The commandos are continuing their operations to nab them.

East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri told this website that Jimmy and the other GNLA militants had fled Williamnagar fearing that the police will launch a massive manhunt to nab them after it was wrong presumed that the outfit was behind the Saturday’s attack of the Williamnagar jail and the subsequent death of the two jail staffs.

Speaking about the ANVC (B), Mantri said that efforts have been intensified to nab the militants who are responsible for the killings of the two jail staffs.- By Our Reporter
