Construction of over 200 new lower primary school buildings have been completed while another 100 plus will be completed within this financial year, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma informed on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that the government is committed and has already earmarked a budget to construct new school buildings as well as renovating and repairing dilapidated school buildings within the next two years.

He informed that there are over 2000 plus government lower primary schools and they have been categorized according to their need and requirements adding “There are around 400-500 schools falling under category A, which will completely need new school buildings. Under category B, such schools will be having some minimum repair or renovation and category C will be less and category D requires the minimum like furniture and all.”

Sangma said, “In the last five years, we have seen lots of progress and about 200 plus new school buildings have already been completed and within this financial year, we will be having some more 100 plus new buildings.”

Asked, the minister said, “In last 50 years, the infrastructure of school buildings was not taken on priority. It is only after the coming of this government that the chief minister in the last five-six years, has taken on a mission mode under mission education, all these buildings have come up now.”

On the construction of another 100 plus new school buildings, Sangma said the government has sought a report from the SDSEOs as to which schools should be taken on priority.

“We have communicated to them to give the proposal priority so that the state government can take it up at the earliest,” he added.
