BJP South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai has requested the intervention of the Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan to take up with the Centre for development of Lady Kerr Welfare Centre (Red Cross Hospital), Shillong.
“…I request you that the project may kindly be forwarded to the Ministry of Doner through Planning Department, Government of Meghalaya for consideration for sanction at the earliest,” Shullai said in a memorandum handed over to Chauhan during a meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Friday.
Shullai informed that the Lady Kerr Welfare Centre, located at the heart of Shillong, is a highly trusted healthcare centre amongst locals and other people alike for meeting the basic and specialized healthcare needs over the past many decades.
However, the present Lady Kerr Welfare centre complex in Laban has been occupied by the IRCS and Lady Kerr Welfare since 1920, and the structure, which is more than 100 years old, is in a dilapidated condition and is beyond repair.
He said in order to make the complex equipped with the much needed common basic infrastructure it is imperative to develop the entire structure with modernised tools, equipment and blood banks.
“In line with the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, this establishment relentlessly aspires to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times all forms of humanitarian activities so that human suffering can be minimized, alleviated and even prevented, and thus contributes to creating a more congenial climate for peace.
In keeping with the overall vision of the scheme and in view of the overall welfare of the social fabric of the city, closely knit with its healthcare services, the government proposes for “Development of Infrastructure at the Lady Kerr Welfare Centre (Red Cross Hospital), Laban, Shillong with special focus of Maternity and Child care,” he added.
