BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang on Monday rubbished the allegation that the National People’s Party (NPP) was defeated from Tura and Shillong in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls because of the BJP’s support.
Speaking to reporters, Kharkrang said, “NPP has been with the NDA right from its inception since it took over as the government in the state and they are also part of the NEDA. When you go by that logic that NPP lost because of BJP’s support then they should have lost in the 2023 MLA elections also.”
“So here you have to also ask the NPP leaders because as of now I think they have introspect as to what went wrong but to really say that because of BJP’s support (they lost in the elections), I totally disagree with you,” he said.
On the allegation that NDA’s defeat in Meghalaya was due to religion, Kharkrang said, “The thing is that I don’t think so religion has got a place or a part to play here because none of the religious groups of Christian in respect of any denomination propagate any particular candidate or party. Yes they hold special meetings on the eve of election to pray to God to give the wisdom to the electorate to choose the right candidate, the right party but directly with full confidence I can say that none of the churches are in support of a particular candidate or particular party.”
Further, Kharkrang maintained that the BJP will continue to work with the NPP in the state.
