Police, mob clash in WKH

SHILLONG, JAN 25: Two police vehicles were damaged and one bike was set ablaze by angry mob after it clashed with the police at a village in Nongstoin after a sub inspector had brutally beaten a truck driver just because he disobeyed the order to stop the vehicle.

The clash on Friday lasted for more than three hours with the angry villagers pelting stones at the police.

The police sup-inspector had beaten the driver of a truck (AF 01 AC – 8113) just because he failed to stop his truck. The driver’s injury ignited the anger and the public gheraoed the police officer.

The West Khasi hills Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) along with three magistrates rushed to the spot but failed to control the mob.

Sources said the public didn’t allow the officials to pass through the place as a result of which traffic along the Nongstoin – Shillong road came to a standstill.

Two police gypsy, one of the Addl SP, was totally damaged even as the angry mob burnt down the bike of Sub-Inspector. As the situation was out of control the police party had to flee the place as the mob hurled stone missiles at them.

However, West Khasi District deputy commissioner S Kharlyngdoh told this website that the situation was now under control. He informed that the sub-inspector Lurshai Sten has been suspended for beating up the driver.- By Our Reporter
