The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to extend its full support to the candidates of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) from both Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats in the forthcoming elections to the 18th Lok Sabha, to be held on April 19.
The announcement was made by BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra.
Confirming this on Friday, BJP state president Rikman G Momin said that the decision was taken at an NDA meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi today.
“The PM has decided to honor NDA alliance partners and hence this decision,” he said.
The NPP is fielding sitting Tura MP Agatha K Sangma and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh from Shillong parliamentary seat.
Asked, Momin said that the state party will have to abide by the decision of the central leadership.
Earlier, the state BJP had sent five names of candidates from Shillong seat and six from Tura for approval of the central leadership.
Cabinet minister AL Hek is among the five ticket aspirants for Shillong parliamentary seat. The other ticket aspirants for Shillong seat include advocate Dr Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait, former state president Ernest Mawrie, BJYM president Mewaker Lyngdoh and Sumitra Laloo.
For Tura seat, the ticket aspirants include sitting Tura MDC Bernard N Marak, former MLAs – Winnerson D Sangma and KC Boro, former MDC Boston Marak, Riya Sangma and Thomas Marak.
Meanwhile, Momin will be chairing a party meeting tomorrow.
