SHILLONG, JAN 24: Purno A Sangma’s twelve loyalists who are technically NCP legislators in the Meghalaya assembly will be resigning in two days time to enable them to contest the upcoming February 23 Meghalaya assembly polls as the NPP candidates.

Even as the Conrad Sangma, who is technically the NCP legislative party leader and opposition leader, informed that the NPP will be sweeping the upcoming assembly polls as it will win eighty percent of the 60 assembly seats, he informed that all of them will be resigning within two days so that they can contest the next elections as the NPP candidates.

Speaking to reporters Sangma said, “We are going to fight where we think we can fight. Our focused is on constituencies where we can win as we are being realistic and true to ourselves.”

In the 2008 assembly elections, the erstwhile NCP led PA Sangma had managed to win 15 seats in the 60 member Meghalaya assembly. Conrad, however, said the NPP now is confident of winning more seats now.

Conrad said that the infighting within the Congress and the exclusion of names of sitting Congress legislators from the party list of candidates was as just expected by the NPP. He said, “The mess within the Congress will no doubt be of great help to the NPP.”

On the use of money power to influence voters, Sangma said he was sure that the voters know how to exercise their franchise as they are looking for a change.

The NPP also announced the names of Prof PM Passah from Shillong North and MK Lyngdoh from Shillong South Constituency. The party has declared 35 candidates even as it has decided to extend support to three independent candidates.

The NPP manifesto will be release in the first week of February.- By Our Reporter
