The State government on Wednesday decided to extend the time for submission of reports by the three regional committees in regards to the remaining six areas of difference till December 31.
A notification issued by the Chief Secretary DP Wahlang on December 13 has stated that this was in pursuance with the decision of the Chief Minister’s level meeting on Assam-Meghalaya border issues held on September 30.
On March 24, the state government reconstituted the three Regional Committees to examine the present status of the remaining six areas of differences and submit their reports within 45 days.
These include – Langpih in West Khasi Hills District; Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah, Block-II in Ri Bhoi District; Block- I, Psiar – Khanduli in West Jaintia Hills District.
The two deputy chief ministers – Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar – are heading the regional committees for Ri Bhoi District and West Jaintia Hills District respectively while cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh is the chairman of the regional committee for West Khasi Hills District.
On December 7, Deputy Chief Minister incharge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong, who is heading the Regional Committee for Ri Bhoi, had said that the meeting between the regional committees of Assam and Meghalaya will only resume by next year.
“Talking about the Ri Bhoi region, (to meet) within this year is not possible as we have Christmas celebration coming up. So we will resume by next year,” Tynsong had said.
He had also maintained that the regional committee will not submit its report until and unless a meeting with the counterpart is held.
